What if I am a victim of Identity Theft?
Can I really get a free credit report each year?
Yes. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com* or call one of the three major credit bureaus. In the state of Maryland you can request a credit report from each of the credit bureaus at one time so you can compare the reported information. Or you can call one bureau at a time for the entire year to get a free report every four months.

What is The National Do Not Call Registry?

You can register your number here* or by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 from the number you wish to register. Registration is free.
Why did the credit union allow my check to be released if it was counterfeit?

You will also be given a 6 digit id code to use when you call back. The company will have the information in advance and only need you to verify questionable transactions.
We may be calling you
To protect your account, we monitor your ATM, debit and credit card transactions for potentially fraudulent activity which may include a sudden change in locale (such as when a U.S.-issued card is used unexpectedly overseas), a sudden string of costly purchases, or any pattern associated with new fraud trends around the world.
If we suspect fraudulent card use, we’ll be calling you to validate the legitimacy of your transactions. Your participation in responding to our call is critical to prevent potential risk and avoid restrictions we may place on the use of your card.
Our goal, quite simply, is to minimize your exposure to risk and the impact of any fraud. To ensure we can continue to reach you whenever potential fraud is detected, please keep us informed of your correct phone number and address at all times.
In the meantime, please be diligent in monitoring transaction activity on your account and contact us immediately if you identify any fraudulent transactions. Here are some additional tips on protecting yourself from fraud:
Protecting the integrity of your account information is our number one priority, so when you come in to one of our branch offices we may ask for your ID. It is our general policy to ID all members before we conduct business even if we know you personally.
Why do you ask for ID when I am not withdrawing money?
While anyone is welcome to deposit funds to any account, we will only provide a receipt to the account holder since our receipts include your name and balance information. We cannot provide any information about the account, including the names associated with an account number, to someone whose name is not on the account. In addition to identifying you, your ID is also an excellent way for our tellers to cross check to be sure the money is going into the correct account, that is, the one with your name on it.
If you are making a change to the account we will need to see your ID so we are confident that it is a change you want. We may hold your ID in order to verify your signature. We will usually make a copy of the ID to be scanned into our files.
If you are changing contact information, it is especially important that we see your ID, since we will be sending account specific information such as statements to your USPS address or passwords to your email address.
What ID should I show?
Of course a driver's license or state issued identification card is always acceptable.
Department of Defense ID is acceptable at the teller line, but since we are not permitted to copy this form of ID, we cannot accept it in cases where we would make a copy such as when you are adding a certificate to your account..
If you have recently moved to a new home and your driver's license does not have your current address, we may ask to see a proof of address when opening a new account. In this case, an electric bill, gas bill or rental contract is an acceptable form of ID to confirm your address.
If you are changing your name because of marriage or divorce we will need to see the appropriate legal documents. We will copy these for our records.
How do you check my ID when I call on the phone?
When you call us on the phone we will ask questions designed to confirm that we know to whom we are speaking. The usual first questions - name, Social Security number, Mother's maiden name - may be sufficient for some transactions, such as when you are paying your loan or MasterCard from your checking account. Other times we may ask you specific questions about the activity in your account.
Please help us by offering identification when asked. It is for your protection.
The best way to protect yourself from identity theft is awareness, not only of your account at Cedar Point, but your entire credit history. Under separate federal and state laws, residents of Maryland are entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three Credit Reporting Agencies.
How do I get my free credit reports?
Why check my credit report?
Why contact all three Credit Reporting Agencies?
Your creditors may not report the payments they receive to all three agencies, so each agency holds slightly different information about you. To make sure all the information about you is correct, it is important to ask each agency.
Report Ordering Information: Although you can get your credit report by going to each agency's web site, you must call them to get the free credit report through the Maryland state law. If you access them on-line, you can get your credit report more quickly, but you will have to pay for it with a credit card.

Looking For Help From a Credit Counseling Agency?
We are sometimes contacted by members regarding how to choose an accredited credit counseling agency. This can be one of the most important choices you will ever make.
The 'good guys' will represent you, charging little to no fees to you, financing their operation with contributions from your creditors. They can reduce or eliminate finance charges and late fees depending upon your situation, helping you to pay bills within full agreement with your creditors. It may not preserve your overall credit score but it will improve your financial forecast in the best way possible.
The 'bad guys' charge you a stiff fee right up front, advise you not to communicate with your creditors any longer and won't disclose to you the fact that they will ruin your credit and good reputation in the process.
Phrases to watch out for are "debt settlement" and "debt cancellation" as clues to the resources being the not-so-good kind. And if they advise you to no longer communicate with your creditors directly you can bet they are not keeping your best interests in mind.
Remember, your Credit Union is here to help! Please call 301-863-3053 to speak to a Debt Recovery Specialist.
